Over on cable, Animal Planet has a Michael Jackson & Bubbles: The Untold Story special, BET has the second season finale of Tiny & Toya, Discovery Channel has a Who Really Discovered America? special, and TNT has the second season premiere of Hawthorne and the series premiere of Memphis Beat.

Prime Picks

Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family): New. We find out more about the girls’ relationships as they do something to pay tribute to the memory of Allison. Plays again next Tuesday before the next new episode. Last week’s episode, “The Jenna Thing,” replays right before tonight’s episode.

Life Unexpected (The CW): Repeat. The fourth episode, “Bong Intercepted,” replays, where Cate tries to get involved after Lux gets suspended from school and Baze tries to get an event that Cate and Ryan are hosting moved to his bar.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent (USA): New. A government official is blackmailing two doctors that have been overcharging their patients and the detectives investigate when the official is found dead. Plays again later.

Other Options

HawthoRNe (TNT): Season Premiere. Richmond Trinity is closing, but many of the doctors and nurses are moving over to James River, which is another hospital on the verge of closing down. Plays again later. This show just didn’t work for me in its first season. I watched the first two episodes and that was more than enough. So, when the screener for the season two premiere arrived, I popped it in to see if it had gotten any better. For me the answer is no. Giving everyone basically the same mission they just failed at over at a new hospital did nothing for me. I like a lot of the cast, but not the show. I’ve said it before, but when watching this show, I feel like I’m being manipulated. Yes, I know that inherently every scripted show on TV is attempting to manipulate you. To get you to laugh here, cry there, etc. But, if you are engrossed in the story and the characters that are telling it, you don’t notice or care that it is happening. This show seems to show its hand and I don’t want to see it.

Memphis Beat (TNT): Series Premiere. Det. Dwight Hendricks, played by Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), has a laid-back style and own way of doing things that doesn’t mesh well with his new boss, played by Alfre Woodard (Desperate Housewives). In the series opener, Hendricks is tasked with investigating what looks to be elderly abuse, which is usually the type of case that is assigned elsewhere. Plays again later. This is not a great show, but I enjoyed it. I have a tendency to like the offbeat cop that goes his own way type of show, plus I really liked the setting of Memphis, even though it is filmed in New Orleans. Other than the setting there isn’t much new here, but I think it could provide some different stories than we see on most detective/cop dramas. I’ll be checking out another episode.

Sports Notes

ESPN a couple 2010 FIFA World Cup games.

ESPN2 has early round play from Wimbledon starting super early and later a couple of College World Series games.

TV Marathons

Bravo has seven episodes of Top Chef.
Oxygen has 12 episodes of America’s Next Top Model.
Spike TV has 11 hours of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episodes.
Syfy has eight episodes of Level 9 early.
USA has 16 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Consumers nationwide have been looking for ways to cut costs during these tough economic times. The housing market has seen significant declines in recent months and the costs of energy continue to steadily increase, resulting in a corresponding increase in costs at grocery stores, pet stores, retail outlets and transportation. Although prices continue to increase, there are some things consumers cannot live without — staples for their families and their pets. Savvy consumers are making the best out of their use of credit in this regard by using credit cards that offer useful rewards.

For example www.catcreditcard.com , in affiliation with www.dogcreditcard.com promotes the Pet Rewards Visa from Bank of America. The Pet Rewards Visa allows the card holder to upload a picture of their dog, cat, or other pet to be displayed on the card. Alternatively, the applicant can select a standard pet picture offered by the issuer. The rewards and benefits of this card include, without limitation: 500 bonus points after your first purchase and 1 point for every dollar spent on everyday purchases. Since rewards begin at just 750 points, the benefits of card use can be seen almost immediately. Credit card reward points can be redeemed for veterinary services, pet food discount certificates, and shelter donations. Moreover, cardholder earn two Pet Rewards Points for each dollar they spend at participating veterinary clinics, pet food retailers, farm and feed stores, and neighborhood pet specialty stores With a 0% introductory APR (for 6 billing cycles), this card offers many of the cost saving features consumers are looking for, website for complete terms and conditions of card usage and application disclosure.

Having a picture of your furry friend on your credit card would brighten anyone’s day. Knowing that using the card will help save you money at pet stores is an added bonus.

It doesn’t take much for me to feel patriotic. So it’s no surprise that’s exactly how I felt all Memorial Day weekend. So did Mary Kay. But it was a surprise that my kids did too, and they’re in their 20s.

We spent the holiday in Washington, D.C., where I commented – and more than once – “This is the only place to be on Memorial Day.” John P. Cosgrove, our host, called a few days after we returned to say a Washington Post reporter must have overheard me because that’s exactly what he wrote in an article the next morning. The reporter either overheard me, or got caught up in the emotion just as I had.

Memorial Day has always been special to me. And my comment in Washington notwithstanding, I’ve been fortunate enough to be other places on Memorial Day that I found just as moving. That includes right here in Greater Pittston. When I was about 10 years old my family moved into a home on Butler Street, right across from the old Pittston High School. Memorial Day came just a few days later and the kids in our family were dazzled to see the Pittston High marching band assembling in the school yard for the annual parade. With two rows of drummers – high school bands were massive in those days – keeping the beat, they marched out onto Butler Street and went around the corner onto Defoe heading toward the William Street hill and downtown Pittston.

Unbeknownst to our parents, my older sisters and I followed along, all caught up in the excitement. What we failed to realize is that we followed the band all the way to Pittston Cemetery in the southern part of town and then didn’t know how to find our way back. I cannot remember the circumstances of how we eventually did but I do recall how worried my mom was. One thing for sure, our town was a very safe place in 1959.

I’ve been to all the local parades in recent years: Wyoming, Exeter/West Pittston, Dupont and each gave me those chills associated with any John Philip Sousa march. Mary Kay and I heard Dr. Juan DeRojas speak following the Exeter/West Pittston parade a few years ago. He had just returned from duty in Iraq. Had we been in town this year we would have made a point of being there to hear Judge Tom Burke, a Vietnam veteran.

We were even in Cooperstown, New York, (home of the Baseball Hall of Fame) one year on Memorial Day to witness a parade with Hall of Famer and World War II veteran Bob Feller as grand marshal. We were in the audience the next day when Feller was asked how much better his records would be had he not lost those years to the war. His answer was priceless. “Young man,” he said, “I made a lot of mistakes in my life, but serving my country was not one of them.”

Feller was one of the honorary grand marshals for this year’s parade in D.C. and as he passed by I wanted to share that quote with Mr. Cosgrove but had a hard time overcoming the lump in my throat.

John P. Cosgrove is the Pittston native who showed up last summer bearing gifts. After serving in the media in Washington for 70 years, he sold his home in Bethesda, packed up his books and memorabilia from that home and from his office in the National Press Club, of which he was once president, and donated all of it – including several priceless items – to the Pittston Memorial Library. Realizing the library might have to expand to house the collection, he added a check for $50,000 to help with the project.

That’s how I got to know Mr. Cosgrove. Last year, he suggested Mary Kay and I join him and his lovely companion Georgia Jones in the capital for Memorial Day. We did. The experience was so (appropriately) memorable – including meeting Ernest Borgnine, like Mr. Cosgrove a Navy veteran, and Edith Shain, the nurse in the famous V-J Day “kiss” photo on Times Square – that this year we took the kids.

The experience was not wasted on them. You have no idea how that pleases me.

See, the thing I thought about a lot last weekend is how patriotism has grown to be un-cool. Criticizing the country we live in, that’s cool. Making fun of George W. Bush, as Brit Paul McCartney did last week in Washington, that’s cool. Saying you’d rather live in Canada, that’s cool. But getting a tear in your eye when Old Glory passes by? Who does that?

Well, my son and daughter did last weekend. And while I am as biased as I can be, they’re the two coolest young people I know. So cool that they were far more impressed with the three Medal of Honor winners sitting next to us at the parade than they were with movie star Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan of Forrest Gump) a couple of rows in front of them.

Showing leadership in putting pro-market, liberty-oriented candidates in Washington, Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) have endorsed Mike Lee in his bid for the GOP nomination for United States Senate in Utah.

The Senate race in Utah is turning out to be a bit of a battle within the Republican Party, with one side, the establishment Republicans, supporting Tim Bridgewater and more conservative Republicans backing Mike Lee.

Because neither candidate was able to win 60% of the delegates at the Utah Republican Party’s convention, the top two candidates, Lee and Tim Bridgewater, will face-off in a primary on Tuesday, June 22nd.

McClintock, who ran against Arnold Schwatzenegger for Governor in 2003 and now represents the California 4th district in Congress called Lee “a true Constitutional Conservative,” adding:

Utahans need someone who won’t simply say no, but who will actively work to turn back the tide of big government. The American people are desperately looking for leaders who will stop taxpayer bailouts, protect individual liberty, reduce taxes and restore Constitutional principles to Washington – Mike Lee is that leader. Sending Mike to the Senate would not only be a victory for Utahans, but for all Americans.

In his press release, Dr. Paul said,

“Mike Lee will do the work to fight for lower taxes and spending and for more freedom in Washington. We need people like Mike voting with me in Congress.”

“Mike Lee is a dynamic young leader who understands our Constitution and will fight against out-of-control government to restore our Liberty. Mike has the courage to stand up against the bailouts and government takeovers being forced down our throats by Washington insiders.”

Lee has also been endorsed by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), the Tea Party Express, talk show host Mark Levin and Red State editor Erick Erickson, among many others.

Jahrd Poindexter, 30, never had a chance when gunmen burst into his apartment Tuesday morning.

“It’s like older sister/mom. I can’t even explain the pain I’m feeling right now,” Poindexter’s sister, Georgia Hawthorne said.

Hawthorne keeps going over the senseless facts in the events following an after-party for dessert to celebrate their 18-year-old sister’s birthday at Poindexter’s apartment.

The party ended in gunfire after two people broke in demanding money and started shooting.

“When I got to the home, my brother was laying in the middle of the road dead,” Hawthorne said.

Two others were killed while others were wounded.

“We need to know something. We’re begging. We’re asking that community for some type of closure,” Hawthorne said.

Poindexter, a professional chef, is survived by his parents, four sisters and three brothers. He was also a father.

“I’m struggling so hard with this. There’s a 14-year-old that doesn’t even understand what happened to his father,” Hawthorne said.

No new information has been released by police, but the grieving family needs answers.

“Whoever did this, I’m speaking directly to you. I hope you do not sleep, I hope you do not rest and I hope you do not have peace in your heart until you can admit to your crime,” Hawthorne said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Allegheny County Police at (412)-475-1300.

Visitation for Poindexter will be held on Saturday at the Bethlehem Baptist Church at 716 Walnut Street McKeesport.

The visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and the funeral will follow.

FIVE seizures a day are just one of the symptoms a Cinnamon Brow mum has to manage for her disabled daughter, who has an extremely rare brain disorder and epilepsy.

Six-year-old Mia Loudon was diagnosed with epilepsy aged two weeks and used to suffer from 15 to 20 fits each day.

She had to have her stomach sewn aged two because each seizure led to her vomiting and choking, meaning she is now fed through a peg in her abdomen. She was fitted with a nerve stimulator, at the age of three Mum Paula, of Perth Close, said: “Mia has good and bad days and all of them are very different. She needs 24-hour care because epilepsy is so unpredictable.

“Having Mia’s stomach sewn was a big decision as we knew we’d never be able to feed her again. It was so sad because she used to really like eating.”

To add to an already complex condition Mia, who goes to Fox Wood School, in Birchwood, also has CDKL5, which is associated with Rett syndrome, a disorder affecting mainly girls and women.

Although present at birth Rett usually goes undetected until regression occurs at about 12 months and children lose acquired skills.

Those with Rett have profound physical and learning disabilities and are totally reliant on others for support throughout their lives.

Paula, who is married to 41-year-old Rob, added: “Not much was known about CDKL5 when Mia was diagnosed in 2005.

“She was only the second child in this country to have it and the 17th in the world.

“Having this makes the epilepsy very hard to control.”

Paula, who had to give up her job as a PA to take care of Mia, has another daughter Amy, aged nine, who has proved invaluable in helping take care of her little sister.

Paula said: “Amy idolises Mia and can deal with a seizure.

She has seen thousands of them but it’s awful to see her cry when Mia has a particularly disturbing one.”

The 35-year-old has built up a support network for dealing with CDLK5 which can be found by typing the condition into Yahoo.
